Introducing the Siwanoy, a Native American Tribe
In Social Studies we learn about the people who lived in our town over the past thousand years. One of those groups were the Siwanoy Indians. Each year we spend a full school day in October getting to know the Siwanoy. We learn their language, their legends, and try to experience their lives.

Native American Day
On a very cold day in October, a woman named C.H. comes to our school to take us on a trip through time. We spend the day under the the trees, trying to feel what it would have been like to live as a Native American before the European Explorers came here.

In the Classroom
After we return home, we continue our trip through time by experiencing life as Native American clans. By the end of the unit we have created a model of a Native American village, complete with wigwams and birch bark canoes.
